Aftercare FAQs
Proper aftercare is essential to help your tattoo heal and maintain its appearance. Always follow any specific instructions provided by your Big Top Tattoo artist.
1. Remove the bandage
Leave the sterile dressing applied by your artist in place for the amount of time recommended by your artist. Wash your hands thoroughly before removing or touching the dressing or tattoo.
2. Wash gently
Using clean hands, gently wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free antibacterial or antimicrobial soap. Do not scrub the tattoo or use a washcloth, loofah, or other abrasive material.
3. Dry carefully
Gently pat the tattoo dry with a clean disposable paper towel or allow it to air dry. Do not rub.
4. Apply a light layer of aftercare product
Apply only a very thin layer of the aftercare product recommended by your artist. Do not over-apply ointment or lotion—the tattoo should be able to breathe.
After the initial healing period, switch to a fragrance-free, dye-free moisturizing lotion as needed to prevent excessive dryness.
Adhesive Film / Second-Skin Bandage
If your artist applies a transparent adhesive healing film, leave it on for the length of time recommended by your artist or the product manufacturer.
Some fluid, ink, or plasma collecting underneath the film during the first day or two can be normal.
Remove the film early if it begins leaking, becomes excessively loose, or if you experience significant irritation around the adhesive. Wash your hands before removal, gently remove the film under warm running water, then wash and dry the tattoo as described above.
Do not reapply adhesive film unless instructed by your tattoo artist.
While Your Tattoo Is Healing

Keep the tattoo clean and avoid touching it unnecessarily.

Do not pick, scratch, or peel flakes or scabs.

Wear clean, loose-fitting clothing over the area when possible.

Avoid soaking the tattoo in baths, pools, hot tubs, lakes, or other bodies of water until completely healed.

Avoid excessive sweating, friction, and activities that repeatedly rub or irritate the tattoo during the initial healing period.

Keep the healing tattoo out of direct sunlight and tanning beds.

Do not shave directly over the tattoo until the skin has completely healed.

Do not allow other people or pets to touch or lick the healing tattoo.

Once completely healed, regularly use sunscreen to help protect the tattoo from fading.
What's Normal?
During the initial healing process, mild redness, tenderness, swelling, itching, flaking, and small amounts of clear or blood-tinged fluid may occur.
